Ahhh… the class. The regality. Add Cookie Monster to the mix, and you have hilarity!
Sesame Street did a spot-on take on the classic PBS show “Masterpiece Theatre” with its take-off, “Monsterpiece Theatre” in the 1970s and 1980s. Cookie, as Alastair Cookie, dressed in a smoking jacket (with a pipe in the earlier episode shown below), and introduced such classics as “Upstairs, Downstairs” and “Twelve Angry Men” in only the way Sesame Street could show them. Here are those two clips…
OK I need to do something to lighten the mood around here… so here are three videos of the classic Piero Umiliani song “Mah Na Mah Na.” The first is from 1969 on Sesame Street. It features two “Anything” Muppets and a wild and crazy guy named Bip Badotta.
The second is the more familiar, more famous version from The Muppet Show in 1976. The cow-like characters are called “Snowths” and the singer is known simply as “Mahna Mahna.”
Finally, a rare one that just appeared– it comes from the Ed Sullivan Show in 1969, not too long after Sesame Street started, and looks very similar to the Muppet Show version, except the laughs are from a live audience and the ending is a little different:
There… now don’t we all feel a little better? 🙂
Miss Patti made an appearance on Sesame Street in 1980 and TORE UP the show with this really clever song. Sing it, girl!!!
