Sesame Street was so popular in the 70s that it had various specials that appeared at nighttime that kids could watch with their families. I remember one that was actually called “Sesame Street at Night,” but I even more vividly remember the Christmas specials.
The best of these was the 1978 “Christmas Eve on Sesame Street.” The cast was at its best– Mr. Hooper, Maria, David, Susan and Gordon, and of course, Bob were there, as was Gordon’s sister Olivia (played by the wonderful Alaina Reed) and Linda Bove, the hearing-impaired friend of Bob.
So in the spirit of Christmas and the associated specials at Christmastime, this week’s “Sesame Moment” (I think it’s time I rename it, don’t you?) features two clips from that special.
The first is of Ernie and Bert. They appear to have exchanged Christmas gifts and share a sweet moment together as they sing the classic “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.”
The second clip features the entire cast on the subway and walking the streets of the city, buying a Christmas tree and ice skating, all the while singing the beautiful song especially written for the show, “True Blue Miracle.”
I think you’ll agree, these are some very special clips. I hope they warm your heart as much as they warmed mine.
